Hospital Adds Robot To Surgical Team

Surgeons at Des Moines’ Mercy Medical Center have a new addition to their team – a robot.

The cyber surgeon, named Da Vinci, has twice the arms of a human doctor and is becoming the top treatment for prostate cancer in the United States.

The hospital said Da Vinci’s extra set of hands will be a big help in performing prostatectomies and hysterectomies.

“It’s very important for Mercy to do something like this to let their patients and their community know they’re up front in all the technologies,” said Ryan Opp of Intuitive Surgical, which designed and build Da Vinci. “They have all these new things and these benefits. They can actually help the patients.”

Mercy Staff said the $1.8 million robot doesn’t replace or eliminate jobs and is controlled entirely by the surgeon.

Methodist Medical Center has a robot like Da Vinci, too.
