More Mothers Struggle To Pay For Food
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa Department of Public Health officials said more Iowa mothers with young children are getting federal food aid.
State health officials said more than 72,500 Iowans enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and children last month. That's up 3.4 percent from last year and it's the highest number ever.
Enrollment in the program is up in areas that were damaged by flooding, but state public health director Tom Newton said economic factors are behind the numbers.
WIC is available to pregnant women and families with children through age 5 with household incomes of up to 180 percent of poverty level, or $38,160 for a family a four.
Families receive coupons they can use for foods that meet nutritional guidelines.
KCCI viewer Colleen sent us an email to let those struggling know there are locations around Des Moines that offer help. She said most churches are involved with Angel Food Ministries. You can find the metro locations at their Web site www.angelfoodministries.com.
You can also find other food pantries and assistance programs on the City of Des Moines' Web site.
