Dems To Counter Republican Response Plan

Space Used For Opposition Research, 'Fact-Checking'

After the Republicans set up their rapid-response operation in Denver for the Democratic National Convention, the Democrats announced Wednesday they would be doing the same in St. Paul.

The Democrats, during the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., said their operation would be called "Just More Of The Same", and will be located across the street from the Xcel Energy Center, the arena where the RNC is taking place.

"Our rapid-response program will be bigger, better, closer and more aggressive than anything seen before," Damien LaVera, Democratic National Committee spokesman, said in a statement according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

The Republican operation, Not Ready '08, is located near the Pepsi Center, the arena where the DNC is being held.

"Just consider this the 'Ministry of Truth,'" said Dick Wadhams, chairman of the Colorado Republican Party, according to the Denver Post's Politics West blog.

Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan told the blog that almost two dozen staffers at the headquarters "will be 'fact-checking' statements made by the Obama campaign and by speakers during the convention."

The Republicans have also rented a satellite truck that sits in the alley next to the space to link some of the GOP leaders with television stations across the country.

Debra Bartoshevich, a former delegate of Hillary Rodham Clinton who was stripped of her credentials by Wisconsin after saying she was voting for John McCain, was among the first round of speakers at the location on Monday. She was also featured in a McCain television ad designed to appeal to Clinton supporters.

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney appeared Tuesday, along with Reps. Eric Cantor R-Va., Lincoln Diaz-Balart, R-Fla. and Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is expected there Wednesday, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty is set to appear Thursday.

Republican surrogates have been given access to the Pepsi Center to do interviews with television networks, which a GOP spokeswoman said Monday night would be afforded to the Democrats during the RNC.
