About Breast Cancer
Breast cancer will strike one in eight women in the United States. That’s a startling
statistic. Everyone seems to know someone with breast cancer – a friend, a mother,
an aunt or sister – and we wonder whether we, too, will be affected. Thankfully, there
are some steps to take to lessen your risk.

Knowledge and early detection are your best defense.
    Did you know? . . .
  • Women in their 40s should have mammograms every one to two years?
  • Women over age 50 should have mammograms every year?
  • 62% of Iowa women over the age of 40 have had a mammogram in the past year?
Are you aware of the symptoms of breast cancer?
  • A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area
  • Nipple tenderness
  • A change in the size or shape of the breast
  • The nipple is turned inward into the breast
  • Nipple discharge
    Are you at risk?
No one is immune, but there are certain risk factors which make it more likely you will develop breast cancer. These risk factors include:
  • Age – breast cancer is uncommon before age 40 and most common after age 60
  • Family history of breast cancer in a mother, sister, or daughter, especially if it occurred before age 40
  • Early age of onset of menstrual periods (before age 12)
  • Late age of onset for menopause (after age 55)
  • The older the age a woman has her first child, the higher her risk of breast cancer
  • The use of hormone replacement therapy (estrogens)
Diagnosis of Breast Cancer
Katzmann Breast Center offers a full range of diagnostic services -- including fine
needle aspiration, in-office procedures and standard surgical biopsy when necessary.
We also work closely with Mercy Diagnostic Imaging services to include mammography,
ultrasound, ultrasound core breast biopsy and stereostatic breast biopsy options. You
can expect a timely and expert medical interpretation of the film or procedure in order
to get you started with treatment as soon as possible if it is necessary.

Accurate and rapid diagnosis is the first step.

Katzmann offers a full range of diagnostic services.
Our Breast Specialist
Every woman has questions concerning breast health at some time during her
life. Our Breast Health Specialist, Tracey, RN, MSN, OCN, coordinates every
aspect of your care at the Center. She can address your concerns, answer
questions, teach breast self-examination, and help you find the resources you
need during each stage of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.

Our Breast Health Specialist works with patients one-on-one to answer any questions they may have.
Treatment Planning
In the event that cancer or another problem requiring treatment is present, a
team of specialists will evaluate your medical condition in detail. Taking your
personal concerns and preferences into consideration, they will develop an
individualized treatment approach appropriate for you in your particular situation.
Consultations with specialists from appropriate medical disciplines can be
conveniently scheduled at the Center. Your personal physician will be involved
and informed of your care every step of the way.

Our highly-trained doctors and staff develop a personalized treatment plan for each patient at Katzmann.
    Education & Support
The Katzmann Breast Center and Mercy Cancer Center offer a variety of education and support service, including:
  • One-on-one counseling
  • A breast cancer support group
  • Assistance in obtaining breast forms, intimate apparel or other clothing
  • Information on complementary therapies such as art, music therapy, meditation, relaxation and soft exercises, imagery, massage, post mastectomy/lumpectomy exercise instructions, and pain management.
  • An extensive collection of books, pamphlets, periodicals, and videos with the latest information on breast care, support readings, cancer detection, prevention, and treatment. Most resources are free of charge or can be borrowed.
Research
In the fight against cancer, knowledge is power. Mercy Medical Center
participates in a wide range of research projects. The clinical research
programs include extensive studies from the National Cancer Institute
cooperative group and the Iowa Oncology Research Association.

Community Outreach
A primary goal of the Katzmann Breast Center is to ensure that all women in
our community know about breast self-examination and mammography and
have the opportunity to be screened for breast cancer.

We also heartily support the efforts of various community groups in the fight
against cancer. Our staff and physicians work with groups such as Susan G.
Komen for the Cure and the American Cancer Society local chapter to raise
funds and awareness for cancer research and services.

In addition, a bi-monthly breast cancer conference is held for health care
professionals to keep them up-to-date on the latest in diagnosis, treatment
and recovery. Katzmann Breast Center, along with the Mercy Cancer Center,
also sponsor an annual Breast Cancer Symposium each spring designed
specifically for breast cancer survivors and related health care providers.
