Will NASCAR Add Newton To 2009 Schedule?
DES MOINES, Iowa -- An opening in the NASCAR touring series schedule could mean big benefits for Newton and the Iowa Speedway.
NASCAR officials have decided to remove Mexico City from the 2009 series schedule and the Charlotte Observer newspaper reported Sunday that the Iowa Speedway is the leading candidate to take over the spot in the schedule.
NASCAR officials have so far decline to say which track would be added to schedule.
The race would bring to Iowa major racing names from the Sprint Cup Series and create a significant economic impact on Newton and Des Moines. Experts said millions of dollars would be brought to the state.
If Newton is selected, officials said the race would likely be held on April 18.
The race would also bring more attention to the track from a national audience on the ESPN cable network. The Iowa Speedway already hosts the IndyCar and NASCAR Camping World East series races.
