Site Puts Positive Spin On Kids' Chores

Program Helps Kids Set Goals, Save Money

UPDATED: 2:21 pm CDT August 22, 2008

How would you like to have your children take responsibility for their chores without the constant nagging that many parents find to be so tiresome yet so common?

MyRewardBoard.com allows kids to earn money for the chores they do, which teaches them how to be accountable as well as how to manage and save their money.

The program fosters and nurtures goal-setting skills, responsible behavior and money sense. Parents place a value on various chores, and kids can log onto the site and collect money for completing each one.

"Children today are immersed in a culture that's saturated with consumer-driven materialism," Barton Listick, founder and CEO of the site said in a statement. "Parents need all the help they can get to encourage a responsible approach to earning, spending and saving money."

Kids keep track of their weekly chores on a chore chart with animated happy face characters that give a thumbs up and cheer when tasks are done.

With the interactive piggy bank, kids can set goals, such as saving for a new skateboard or bike. The piggy bank also keeps track of kids' allowances, while allowing parents to maintain control of how much allowance is eventually earned.

Another achievement tool is the goal gizmo. When a goal is met, a certificate of achievement is printed out, and kids get extra star points.

The program uses positive reinforcement, but it also allows parents to impose consequences when a child's behavior isn't exactly on target.

The optional demerit tracker, which is in the shape of a bulls-eye, allows parents to set the number of demerits that can be attained. If the demerit count is too high, parents can choose to have a child's allowance skipped for the week.

MyRewardBoard.com also offers fun extras for kids, such as puzzles, jokes and special birthday messages.

Users pay a one-time fee of $19.95 to access the program, then both parents and kids are on their way to a more harmonious approach to getting those daily tasks done.
